Game star is right although the ping would normally be seen as a drawback it was the cause for more hostile deaths than users of the rifle. they would drop an empy cartidge to make the sound then when the enemy popped out they got popped.

even though the pling was the largest draw back, we still adapted and whooped two nations with this rifle. thanks to liberals, the M16 family has yet to do that... it almost did in vietnam and is almost there in Iraq and Afganistan.

also a common trick was to throw a empty magazine on the groung that cause it made a pling soung so kraut/jerry or japs would pop there head up and u would be just waiting there to shot .........smart idea =]
USMCoklahoma (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
no actually its not. we adapted to the "Pling" and when jerry or the japs poped up to fire, another guy would be up and smoke check them.

they arent replacing the M4/M16 with the M14, the reason they have the M14 in iraq rigt now is for the DMR/DM role (designated marksman rifle/designated marskman).

i doubt he was trained on an M1 Garand, they were just getting the chance to shoot it.
